If you are trying to build a simple, classic wardrobe, then the phrase "fall and winter trends" might not sound too appealing. I've decided to round-up the lasting trends that will survive several seasons, and may already be classic pieces that never go out of style (like plaid- plaid is always a fall trend, every single year, right?). Here are the pieces that will help you look fashionable this fall and winter, and hopefully next fall and winter too.

1. Ankle Boots
Ankle boots are a huge trend right now, and are seen much more lately than their taller boot cousins. They can be worn under flares and over skinnies, and are a great overall staple.

2. Flared Pants
Did flared jeans ever really go out of style? Does this mean skinny jeans are on their way out? I don't know, but I do know that even if flares are supposedly "out," it won't be long before they're back "in." And this fall, they are definitely in.

3. Ponchos
Ponchos are soft, cozy, and great in any winter closet. Aztec prints are fun, but if you want a poncho with staying power, opt for neutral colors and classic stripes.

4. Dusters
Another cozy addition to a fall or winter wardrobe is a duster-length piece. Dusters are becoming popular in coats and cardigans. Personally, I'll take any extra inches in our Minnesota winters ;).

5. The Wide Belt
I have had my black wide belt for almost 2 decades, and it comes in handy any time I need to accentuate my waist. I'm happy to see that it's in style, but I don't remember a time when it was out.

6. Grey
Grey is a great alternative to black or brown, and is especially prominent this season. I could do a whole load of it in our home, with all the grey staples in my family's closets.

7. Varsity Stripes
Varsity stripes are getting a lot of attention this fall, but they are as classic as Friday night football.

8. Military Green and Military Jackets
As with grey, military green acts as a nice alternative to other neutrals. It has an earthy fall feel, and looks especially great with black.

9. Plaid
As I stated before, plaid will always be in style this time of year. Can you imagine a fall trend list without it?
