Daily Nourishment

Each morning when my eyes blink open, there is something I immediately crave. It's not pancakes or coffee, a good stretch or even a hot shower.

It is the most basic element of nourishment for my body.

It is pure, simple, and easily obtained. It is, of course, water.
After hours of sleep, my thirst overrides any other desire, and my body continues to rely on this basic element throughout the day to feel whole and energized.

They say water does more than just nourish, it actually makes up who we are. On average, our bodies are 60% water. We could only survive 3-5 days without it, whereas we could survive a few weeks without food.

I've noticed another morning craving that is almost more powerful than my physical thirst. It is the essential thing that my soul needs to thrive. It is the "living" water- a pure, simple substance that I need a large glass of to sustain my soul for the day. The living water, the living word.

There are diverse ways to nourish the soul. Long walks in nature, beautiful strains of music, a refreshing change of pace. But, just as our bodies can't go without water, the soul can't thrive without the nourishing power of scripture reading. I notice a huge difference in the days I skip it, as if my soul becomes a bit withered. Why?

Why does my soul need the word of God as quickly and intensely as my body needs a glass of water? Why do I feel so off, so parched, so lacking without it?

I think the answer lies in the essence of what the "living water" really is: communication with God. Our souls come from Him, and are crafted from His elements. Maintaining that relationship, that connection, replenishes the divinity within us that can so easily drain away in a decaying world. The word of God keeps us in touch and in tune with what we are really made of, and where we came from.

I never feel truly right after waking up until I've had my water.
Both kinds.
